Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
